Ontario Construction Businesses impacted by WSIB Bill

Last updated: Jan. 7, 2013

If you have workers or not, Bill 119 will impact you. This new legislation brings significant changes for all construction business owners, contractors and subcontractors.

Starting January 1, 2013, nearly everyone working in Ontario in the construction industry must have workplace safety and insurance coverage from the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB).

Some action is required by all business owners in order to comply with this legislation.

Who Needs Coverage?

  • Employers with workers
  • Independent operators
  • Sole proprietors
  • Partners in partnerships
  • Executive officers in corporations

Clearances are Key

WSIB clearance certificates are mandatory starting January 2013.
A clearance confirms that you’re registered with the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) and that your account is in good standing.

No coverage means no clearance. No clearance means no work.
